Cristiano Berti – Futile Cycles #2 Boggiano

By 24 November 2017 No Comments

The second work of the series Futile Cycles is devoted to a figure already present in Futile Cycles. Gaggini, who acts as an intermediary in the commission of Fuente de la India (Havana).
The time span involved in the survey is much wider than in the previous project, and goes from the last quarter of the eighteenth century to the present day. The main protagonist is in fact the forefather of a heterogeneous, offspring scattered around the world.

Antonio Boggiano

Antonio Boggiano (1778-1860) from Savona emigrated to Cuba at the end of the eighteenth century, settling in Trinidad. Research carried out so far has made it possible to confirm the highly adventurous biography of this character lost in oblivion, of which many Afro-Cubans in Trinidad bear the surname.

The project

It involves carrying out a historical research, with the collaboration of Trinidad historians, the realization of a series of shots made for the artist by the photographer Piero Ottaviano, and a publication.

The Futile cycles

The Futile Cycles project borrows its title from biochemistry, for which the “futile cycle” is a dissipation of energy, a process that wastes energy. It concerns history, historical research and its meaning today. The artist raises questions about the present and the future of this discipline, about the capacity of history to contribute to the interpretation of reality, in a world that increasingly mixes cultures and peoples, and how the practice of historical research can survive in a world that makes speed an indispensable value. Berti’s Futile Cycles therefore make history into the object of an artistic project.
The first work of the series was dedicated to the Genoese sculptor Giuseppe Gaggini, seen especially as the author of a monumental fountain for the city of Havana, and as contractor of a marble quarry in the Piedmont Alps. The project resulted in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Villa Croce in Genoa (October 2015) and in the publication of Gaggini. Le Alpi e il Tropico del Cancro (Quodlibet, Macerata) (November 2017).
